DBT was first designed in the 1970s for clients with Borderline Personality Disorder by a psychologist named Dr. Marshs Linehan who previously had the diagnosis herself. DBT is now used to help with depression, anxiety, anger management, suicidal behaviour, non suicidal self injury, alcohol and substance use and emotional regulation for everyone. DBT teaches us how to look at our behaviours and consequences through learning mindfulness skills. Having this awareness opens up our minds to learn and to accept a better way of effectively coping with our emotions by learning how to change how we respond to difficulties, and unpleasant situations. We can then learn how to regulate and express our emotions in a skillful way. DBT focuses on skills development and resource building.
